The metaphor of shoal is so beautiful and yet strong, it directly strikes you to be in action and start doing something which can integrate us like the fishes. To make such integration happen, we need to bring people on a common platform where they can connect with each other and march ahead for a better world. YL is providing exactly this platform.
· The videos are immensely inspiring. I was not aware of the concept of social entrepreneurship before I went through this material, but now I realize I have a perennial one in built. The vision of working at local schools is brilliant – just think of all the minds that we could reach! So many people believe, as I previously had, that we cannot help a cause because we do not have much money to donate. This publication, YL Mag shows just how wrong that assumption is. · I liked your ‘Shimmers from the Shoal’ article and found it tremendously inspiring. It is exciting and challenging to be a small part of this.-Anna, Bulgaria
· It has been a long time since I read as motivating an article as this one. In troubled times as today this article creates hope and shows a path to go forward together as one, just like shoal of fish. All the issues discussed – fair global citizen, positive news culture emphasize we are the one who can create a positive change for the betterment of people and the nature around us and we don’t need to wait for someone else to come and set our home right. ‘Shimmers of shoal’ is a very good and constructive read.-Akshita, India

The links provided in the YL had opened a lot of gateways to my imagination and made me believe that I am not alone and there are whole bunch of like-minded people in the world who are also dying to bring positive changes around.-Muhammad, India
· Yes, I went vegan. And it’s been 3 entire months. I have been thinking about it a lot over the years. But ever since I started writing about PETA (for YL), watching all the video clips….I choose to stay vegan as long as I live. Its beautiful to respect animal rights-Nusrat, USA
· I am impressed! There are a lot of creative and inventive things going on. Thanks YL, for showcasing those to us-Ivy, Canada
· Its really inspiring seeing what others are doing around the world and learning more about how you people are changing other people’s lives. YL have seriously motivated me. Its the right place for me. I am really eager and waiting for the day that I will send my first positive, inspiring story that will impact on people. – Paul, Canada
· Current media does ‘feed’ us blurbs about how bad the situation is – and on how many fronts! I do not wish to say that all the news is sensational to sell newspapers or to get viewers, but there is certainly a choice that is being made and in this ‘filtering’ process, what happens to the success stories? While the stock market data are continuously scrolling along the bottom of the screen, the stories that we could learn from and become inspired by are few and far between. In fact, finding success stories by searching on the Internet was harder than I expected. Actions are being taken to help our world evolve to be a better place and the individuals who are showing courage, creativity and determination deserve to be heard! I’m glad YL is one of ‘em-Nicole, Kuala Lumpur
· Every single article and speaker in the YL videos made me feel the adrenalin rush in my body! I want to move and make the change. I want to help my people get rid of skepticism and believe in their ability to change. Finding people on YL Mag of different ages, backgrounds and races share one big dream and are actually working on making it coming true gives me a push. I wish I could transmit that very same feeling to all those around me. No matter how rich or poor, famous or not, happiness is generated by spreading it among others. Simple ideas can grow and simple people can take huge steps, carrying along the entire humanity.-May, Egypt
· Touching and moving articles/videos; now I understand how worth it is to be part of a “positive world-changing movement”. -En, Norway
· I really like the work done by 4REAL. I went to a lecture on Saturday and I saw the director of Rattapallax, a DVD magazine. They are now working with literature in movies, and it gave me a lot of ideas as well as to how can videos make a difference. What I thought is that if there’s content of the magazine produced in this format, it makes it very interesting and easy to use them at school. Saatchi & Saatchi publishes them – and they seem to be very interested in sponsoring great works.-Fernanda, Brazil
· I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the positive news culture articles and the videos. The vision of a unified and altruistic world where everyone helps one another to serve each other is very inspiring!! The touching articles and videos revealed to me the beauty of the human spirit. The love of humanity is definitely present in these videos because everyone seems to lovingly express their connections with each other and bring people together through mutual friendship. Every article and video that I have viewed showed me how wonderful it is to give to humanity. I look forward to reading more inspiring stories!!-Christopher, Mexico
· I am extremely grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to work with you and for your organization. YL articles are very well written and encourage me to work and be a support in the change related activities. If an opportunity comes up to be a speaker for Youth Leader, I would like to take it on.-Preethi, India
· Thank you very much for organizing and sharing this wonderful opportunities. Your sacrifice and devotion to youth will be remembered in their hearts and ours as well.-Hyunwoo, Korea
· While reading article ‘Shimmers from the Shoal’ I so fondly recall the phrase “Your voice is the Buddha’s voice.” It might have a different meaning for different people. But, for me it means exactly what has been written in this article. It means that we have to use our voices, which include different mediums that have evolved today, like radio and all, as it is the manifestation of our voices, to the best of our abilities to spread the positive news culture. This best use is the only way to accelerate the “shoal behaviour”.-Priyanka, India
· YL moved me to be a part of something extra-ordinary. Writing such success stories like young Ryan’s would truly impact the young generation. Experiencing young Ryan’s positive transformation was absolutely amazing! Indeed such stories can make a difference and I want in!-Ayan, India
Comment and thought regarding the ‘YES’ program:
· After reading this I was filled with delight and inspiration and if i am being completely hones these were counteracted by feelings of humility and inadequacy, from a purely personal and subjective point of view. These emotions are and can however be justified by the YES campaign itself. When i mentioned or think of the inadequacies on my behalf I am forced to quote, “You stand out…and the moment you stand out you are in the bulls eye of criticism”, this quote bears relevant and personal cognizance with me on a personal and public level and i find that although the quote is somewhat negated it is a power house of affirmation. YES exemplifies and makes it okay for you or me or others to stand out and face the criticism because it equips the world and communities with like minded people, positive people and positive change. Change can only spring from the shoots of education and this is the immediate reaction I had this group of young and admirable activists. A group who is not afraid to stand out, a group who are proud of their differences, because I our experiences are how we relate and how we learn and make us who and that we are and a group of people who relate this to all in a positive and pro- active way. Too many times and too often, human rights issues are justified by this very thought, this very quote, and too many times are these very things antagonized, we need a mind shift and I take my hat off to YES who provides the youth with exactly that, as Ghandi said :” Be the change you want to see in the world,”
· The YES! Video has tremendous impact in its message. The use of its images and the activities it performs gives on a sense of empowerment. The inclusion of personal stories and the display of raw emotion give a viewer a very personal connection to the people in the video. The YES! Jams are a fantastic idea, creating a forum and a space for youth to discuss current issues ways in which they can affect change. “Connecting” will definitely be the “strategy used to heal”
· Absolutely INSPIRING videos!
Comments about the articles on ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ and ‘Social Business’:
· Firstly let me start by saying that angle and aspect of the work and dynamics of a contributor is a fresh and new angle to me. it enlightens me and i am glad that feel more informed. Too many times we stagnate on our views on our impressions and our willingness to help. I don’t want to be a philanthropist. That term has an air of consumerism and commercialism to in, in the sense that it is related to big economics, big economist, business, product, value market, big bank accounts. But charity means that you give of what is in excess to you, to me to every person in this world and everyone has an excess of something, be it something that materializes in the form of basic human needs, like a food factory, give of that, or time, or the ability to listen or talent, These are things and many more, that we are all blessed with and some are blessed with more, and as human beings we always want more then we actually need. I say, give of the excess, you want what you need and not need what you want, in that case someone else needs it more than you, and you have the ability to give back. Organizations like Ashoka, Skoll foundation, etc, tie all these things together and make them real, accessible and more importantly they have a higher success rate than other, regular business in consumer markets, they are not interested in the size of pocket, only the size of hearts. Theirs and others.
Comments about the Article: ‘Shimmers from the Shoal’
· Amazing commendable flow of thoughts. As long as thoughts remain just thoughts, the world is bound to stagnate in spite of all the cursory technological advancements. Every single thought has to be put into action. In fact the spark to act has to be triggered from within every being, then of course to be automatically influenced by the various external factors. What a fabulous depth in portrayal of the above simple but beautiful thought to translate life into a meaningful journey with memorable moments woven through. The lack of flexibility in today’s world being ruled by super rigid tankers is quite scary to think of. To overcome the looming fear and to pave way for a smooth sail of the world in the common journey ahead, the lesson from the flexible shoals is truly touching. Wonderful weaving of the intricate details of the harsh truth of rigidness in today’s world to produce the fine fabric stressing the importance of flexibility. Confidence in projecting the innate desire of seeing the world moving constantly giving way to changes around and filling the void created by stagnation is aptly expressed in the shimmers of the shoal. A shining example and a scintillating guide for a smooth sail.- Jayanthi Raja
· ‘Shimmers from the Shoal’ is very informative. It inspires one to take that plunge into the positive of new reporting. I personally think we still live on the old age, ‘ no news is good news’. News and Journalist need to get together as a shoal and change the way we perceive news in today’s context. The article should be read in many schools giving them a chance at positive journalism instead of the negative one we all are acquainted with too well.-Akashi Gill
· The idea of responding to situations like a shoal of fish is effective, though complex. Crowd sourcing as a current trend has produced some very effective results when leveraged correctly. The Strong Angel conferences are a good example of this. Learning about “postive news” from examples, through second hand accounts, and through educational systems in one way of leveraging the power of the crowd to issues that affect the world. Using online spaces and virtual reality to bring together change makers is another to access the power of networks, connections and relationships. The technology now available allows for innovative tools to be created for use in rapid shoal-like responses.
· Shoal of fish came as a revelation to me. An article full of vision for a better world. You have mentioned climate change quite a few times in the article. I think that we need to spread more awareness about how every one can contribute to conserve energy. Turning off the taps properly, saving electricity. Small drops make an ocean.
· This article is what truly convinced me to take part in the Youth Leader magazine. The idea of the shoal corresponds to my idea of how journalism could function and how it could make a difference in the world. The internet and other modern technology have changed the way we consume information and the Youth Leader is one way further exploring and fully understanding the possibilities available nowadays.
· ‘Shimmers from the Shoal’ is very inspirational…it gives an impetus, a hope to work towards a change movement to make this world a better place. I believe communication can be the biggest strength which can help develop awareness in all about the importance of positive growth. Also, the language that has been used is direct, and engaging…the reader feels motivated. Your idea about informal sustainability learning environments is amazing and will have a great impact upon the youth of today. Easy and accessible knowledge should be provided to make knowledge an ‘activity’ and not a burden…Wow…simply love your ideas and energy on the mass movement in Europe that you plan to begin with such a simplistic level…using young energy to create positivism.
· The Shoal metaphor is fascinating, exemplifying out of the box creative thinking. The idea of providing supportive and collaborative networks for consultation is great. This gives a platform to people to connect and convert their thoughts to definite actions. I feel really privileged to get an opportunity to contribute to this movement in whatever way I can.- Surabhi
· Beautiful article!! I completely believe in reaching out to schools as a powerful means to educate the masses. The metaphor to the shoal of fish with a collective goal and the power to be agile is what we need to transform ourselves into and I believe, with some courage and effort that this is truly possible. The presentation by David Wasdell on climate change was inspiring; I never suspected that there was such a deep chasm between ground breaking real time research and its availability to the public. His analogies are truly spellbinding – the man on the Victoria Falls looking to the past and almost certainly on the tipping point as he moves into the future is a realistic representation of where we are at this point with respect to climate change. Looking forward to more such inspiring pieces of work that will help us spread powerful positive messages to people and help make a difference.-Sidharth, India
· Very inspiring and informing. I spent an enjoyable half day going through these and the recommended articles. Fantastic, awesome article. I love the metaphor-Lauren, Belgium
· It was no less than an exposure and experience to go through the documents and links –Anindya, Bangladesh
· The article is great. It is well written and clear. It gives an explanation and theories that drives the organization and then gives examples of the different initiatives taken by groups all over the world. It works well as the examples is a great way of introducing readers to the activities of the group and what to expect from the website and the magazine. The only thing I would have liked to see would be more links or sources to the theories and writers that were mentioned. This is not really necessary in an article but it would have been helpful for people interested in reading more. The Shoal model of networks reminded me of a few articles that my partner who is currently a PHD student working on complex networks has passed on to me. I will attach the pdfs with my feedback in case you find them interesting. Further work with complex networks and news dissemination could be interesting to pursue as well. I could look into it (finding researchers interested in the idea) if you feel this is something that would be interesting for the organization, let me know.-Joanna, Colombia
The Skoll Foundation Video
· The video on social entrepreneurs was especially meaningful to me because I followed Grameen Bank very closely when they won the Nobel Prize in 2006. The idea of social entrepreneurs solving world problems in innovative ways is fantastic one. Muhammad Yunus’ concept of microfinance quickly spread to development organizations around the world, becoming an integral part of assistance to developing worlds.
The Ashoka Video
· Ashoka Foundation’s implementation of business venture capital methods makes the launching of new social entrepreneurs far more structured and effective. Their concept of “leadership having power through networks” is one that has proven very effective in their organization.
Videos on the Youth Leader website
· The ‘Metowe’ initiative is a wonderful campaign, very fun and very informal! It shows that change can be a fun activity, with lots of noise and happiness.
· The problem of child labor in India is a terrible one, with 1000′s of children forced into work in the large cities and even rural villages. The work of the MV Foundation was a delight to hear. The video was very comfortable, informal and interesting to listen to. Hearing that 600,000 children have been brought to school was wonderful news! When wonderful initiatives like this are made public, other young people will be inspired to start their own movements. This is another wonderful example of social entrepreneurship, a way of making change from within a community.-Andre, Canada
· These videos are very inspirational and have influenced me deeply. The Micro Finance model is being replicated in India as well. My previous organization – HSBC Bank, India is also involved in this initiative. It’s amazing to see the impact it has on people’s lives. They actually have a tool to break the cycle of poverty and lead a happy life.
· The videos are inspiring and show the real stuff. Action and not just words. The thing I found in them is that there is no marketing but only the real endeavour.-Parul, Nepal
· These videos are truly inspiring. I was completely ignorant as to the enormous impact that young people have made upon the world in recent time. I especially was amazed by Ryan’s Well and the dedication that such a young boy exhibited toward helping people so far away. The maturity and sense of giving that such a has achieved should serve as a lesson for many people much older than he, and I support the work of the Magazine spreading message like this, in order to inspire us.- Monica, Mexico
· ‘When I joined media, the definition of ‘News’ was given is,( and I guess it’s the definition that most people get) ‘When a dog bite a human being, that’s not news, however, news is when the human being now bites the dog. In essence, we are told that news is something out of the ordinary, and in most cases what readers would call negative news.
This has been mostly taken over by most news organizations and I have to admit that looking back, its takes most of the pages in our dailies in Africa where there is rarely positive news.
This seems to be almost the opposite of the news I can see in the YL articles where for instance Ryan’s story where of course it’s not an ordinary thing, but very positive. A story of an ordinary young man who struggles to make lives better in a completely different part of the world.
On top of inspiring the readers, the story rather urges in a way other people to join such ventures to help in improving the lives of people elsewhere. And secondly unlike the news stories on the papers, the story keeps the best for the last, I mean in an ordinary newspaper, the biggest things which happened could have come first, like the original $70 fundraising growing to over $750,000 as well as the foundation providing clean water and related health services to people in Africa with projects in Nigeria, Tanzania, Malawi and Ethiopia as well as Uganda and Ryan, only 11, being one of the UNICEF’s panel of experts speakers on water health and poverty at the United Nations’ World Summit of Sustainable Development in Johannesburg 2002
Re: What gives people courage? I agree that courage comes from recognition and a feeling of connectedness. One’s spirit is filled with hope as you reach towards positive energy to energize you. It is definitely a feeling of connectedness since there is a feeling of oneness with the universe and omnipotence. As the famous Latin quote “per aspera ad astrum” it means through the rough to the stars. There is a struggle and rough period at times and this is often when you need courage to continue so that you can achieve prosperity.-Jasmine, Philippines
Comments without the names of comments makers:
· The story of RYAN is very inspiring. It’s the shear potential of dedication and persistence which has yielded so magnificent results. A story so ordinary in the beginning unwrapped as so magnificent and beautiful. A simple wish of child powered by his dedication and devotion to the cause is bringing races and nations closer unlike any other thing. Its connecting people across borders and inspiring others to follow in footsteps of RYAN. his is the case of water, there can be other issues too whose solution can be devised by the able people and can serve the results for the people in need somewhere in any corner of the world. Ryan’s saga once again proves that its not the resources which are required to bring a change its the will and love in your heart for the mankind which paves the way of success, because angels are always guarding you when you are on the right path
The article is well framed. It starts by highlighting the early life and motivation of Ryan to collect $70 for the well and elegantly opens up his journey from there after. Justice has been done to Ryan’s efforts by telling how he turned every hindrance into a motivation and how he approached a difficulty. I found the sentence ‘Undeterred, Ryan replied, “I’ll just do more chores then.”’ most appealing and this is the sentence which shows, what this article is all about.
· I have had very little exposure to social entrepreneurship till now. The video links created an interest in me for this venture and I want myself to be working in a similar field in the near future. It is a very promising area to ensure the development in a sustainable way. Personally I found shorter videos more appealing than the longer ones. But each video did make me think of all the possibilities that exist to make this planet a better place which I never thought existed.
· Great discovery from the article about the shoal, in fact my angle of alphetization boils down to traditions, i am concerned about how i can link up my continent to our course without taking them far from home. For instance if its climate chanage, i know that there are some law and taboo that exist in culture to check it but modernization has completely brushed it aside with the excuse that it fetish and completely idolistic. I think it is time for my continent to go back and find out what they were missing, change the bad adopt the new and efficient if only it will make the world a better place. -Ama, Ghana
· Do they have access? Maybe not yet, but if they have Internet or if their school prints out some YL stories and shares with them the accomplishments of other young people, it could help. It’s a start!
· The ‘MetoWe’ video is very interesting. Up until now, I had no idea what power youngsters possess within them, it could change their lives; it could change the entire world!
I resume my feedback by some words in a boy’s tshirt in the video of the WE DAY 08 – Be the change!
· ‘Shimmers from the Shoal’ is one of the brilliant articles I read in recent past. The metaphor of shoal is so beautiful and yet strong, it directly strikes you to be in action and start doing something which can integrate us like the fishes. To make such integration happen, we need to bring people on a common platform where they can connect with each other and march ahead for a better world. YL is providing exactly this platform.
· M. Yunus is an inspiration because he has demonstrated the power of small changes; he has shown that we don’t have to wait for governments, which we know are large administrations that are slow to react, to instigate change. The beauty of the Grameen Bank is in enabling and empowering many through small, cumulative, creative and collective actions.
· Ashoka is a significant discovery for me. I think I had heard of it before, but I never really knew what Ashoka was about. The website is excellent and full of information and exciting ideas! Thanks YL for introducing me to Ashoka
· When I was a child, I believed that one person can make a difference. As an adult, somehow that belief weakened. I have recently left a job where I was over-worked and regularly burned-out. My days at the work lacked meaning and I began to look for activities that would allow me to make a difference. In the past two and a half weeks, I have been reconnecting with the world of unsung non-profit ventures and I have found so many opportunities that I never knew were there. Thank you for providing me a way to be involved in something POSITIVE! ![]()
· I understand much better the aims of the Youth Leader magazine initiative having read this article. It is refreshing to see that there are people out there who remain positive and active despite the difficult global challenges we face. Great ideas!
· I believe that we must make connections, in media, in technology… everything. And we must have the ability to be the driving force behind it. YL is helping us to use our full potential for bringing positive changes; YL is like the light in the darkness.
· I thank you for your most gracious and warm welcome, I feel privileged and proud to be associated with this cause and be a part of this team!
· The idea of positive news media is great. In my experience and my studies in journalism we are trained to write and find stories that sell, that are unique and that catch the eye. This often means reporting ‘bad’ news. I think that the idea of reporting about projects that inspire, that set examples is also effective and could lead people to think about their lifestyles and their actions
· I have given my feedback on videos and articles. To describe them in 1 word, amazing.
· Pictures convey more than words but videos convey even more. Videos about Youth Leadership & Social Entrepreneurship are simply amazing. One particular video viz. World on Fire was really soul awakening. I’ll value each penny after watching this video. I hope to start something like ‘me to we’ in my locality soon.
· The videos are immensely inspiring. I was not aware of the concept of social entrepreneurship before I went through this material, but now I realize I have a perennial one in built. Putting together a platform to show case, this is a remarkable contribution. The positivist inside me definitely is charged up at the possibilities.
· I liked this story. It was both informative and inspirational. This video was great http://www.apollo-gaia.org/PlanetEarth/index.htm. The links are endless – in a good way….I kept clicking from one to the next. You can really see how the story welcomes or facilitates further reading and understanding. Is it possible to have the websites/links embedded in the photos of websites that illustrate your story (I imagine this can be done but I don’t know how)?-Louise, Canada
· Positive energy radiates through every single part of the article. Individuality and materialism has been spreading all over the world for so long, and I believe that it’s about time for this to change. I’ve always embraced those beliefs of YL’s, but never got to know what to call them until I read the article. Unity and collaboration is the answer and the key for making this world a better place for all of us. Positivism can actually be contagious, and this is actually what I’m planning to do and learn from you guys.
